Essential Particles

Particles (助詞 / じょし) are small hiragana tags that show each word’s role in a sentence: subject, object, destination, means, and more. For many learners, especially those coming from Mandarin or English, particles are one of the hardest parts of Japanese.

Mandarin relies largely on word order for these roles. Japanese marks them with particles instead.

If sentence structure is the blueprint, particles are the labels on every box. This page covers the eight essential particles beginners encounter first, plus から/まで (from/until), with examples, Mandarin bridges, and frequent errors.

Particle Pronunciation Core function Mandarin equivalent
wa Topic marker (topic fronting, no particle)
ga Subject / focus marker (context-dependent)
o Object marker (word order)
ni Target, time, destination 在/到/给 (partial)
de Location of action, means 在/用/坐 (partial)
no Possessive, modifier
mo Also, too
e Direction (toward) 往/向
から kara From (starting point)
まで made Until, up to

Function: Marks what the sentence is about. “As for X…”

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
(わたし)学生(がくせい)です watashi wa gakusei desu As for me, I am a student. 我是学生。
東京(とうきょう)(おお)きいです Tōkyō wa ōkii desu Tokyo is big. 东京很大。
これは(ほん)です kore wa hon desu This (one) is a book. 这是书。
(ねこ)()きです neko wa suki desu (Speaking of cats,) I like them. 猫,我喜欢。
日本語(にほんご)(むずか)しいです nihongo wa muzukashii desu Japanese is difficult. 日语很难。

Function: Marks the grammatical subject, especially when introducing new information or answering “who/what?”

This is one of the hardest distinctions in Japanese. Here is the core idea:

Use は Use が
Known topic, general statement New information, specific identification
“As for X…” “X is the one that…”
Contrast between topics Non-contrastive subject
Sentence Nuance
(わたし)学生(がくせい)です I am a student. (general self-intro)
(わたし)学生(がくせい)です I am the student. (answering “who?”)
(ねこ)()きです I like cats. (in general)
(ねこ)()きです Cats are what I like. (emphasis on cats)
(だれ)()ましたか Who came? → answer with が
田中(たなか)さんが()ました Mr. Tanaka came.
Japanese Romaji English
(あめ)()っています ame ga futte imasu It is raining.
(あたま)(いた)いです atama ga itai desu My head hurts.
日本語(にほんご)(はな)せます nihongo ga hanasemasu I can speak Japanese.
ここに(ほん)があります koko ni hon ga arimasu There is a book here.
When answering 誰が来ましたか (Who came?), you should mark the person with:
With 好き (to like), the liked thing takes which particle?

Function: Marks the direct object, the thing the verb acts upon.

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
りんごを()べます ringo o tabemasu eat apples 吃苹果
(ほん)()みます hon o yomimasu read a book 读书
(みず)()みます mizu o nomimasu drink water 喝水
日本語(にほんご)勉強(べんきょう)します nihongo o benkyō shimasu study Japanese 学日语
(うた)(うた)います uta o utaimasu sing a song 唱歌

In Mandarin, 我吃苹果 puts the object after the verb. Japanese puts the object before the verb and marks it with を: 私はりんごを食べます. Mandarin has no equivalent particle; word order does the work.

を is pronounced o, not “wo.” It almost never appears inside vocabulary words. If you see を, it is almost certainly the object particle.

Function: Covers destination, specific time, indirect target, and existence location.

Use Example Meaning
Destination (to) 学校(がっこう)() go to school
Specific time (at) (さん)() at 3 o’clock
Indirect object (to) 友達(ともだち)() meet a friend
Existence (in/at) (つくえ)(うえ)(ほん)がある book is on the desk
Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
(えき)()きます eki ni ikimasu go to the station 去车站
(しち)()()きます shichiji ni okimasu wake up at 7 七点起床

ここに(ねこ)がいます koko ni neko ga imasu there is a cat here 这里有猫
日本(にほん)()んでいます Nihon ni sunde imasu live in Japan 住在日本

Function: Marks where an action happens, or the means and method by which something is done.

Use Example Meaning
Location of action 学校(がっこう)勉強(べんきょう)する study at school
Means/method バス() go by bus
Tool/material (はし)()べる eat with chopsticks
Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
図書館(としょかん)勉強(べんきょう)します toshokan de benkyō shimasu study at the library 在图书馆学习
電車(でんしゃ)会社(かいしゃ)()きます densha de kaisha ni ikimasu go to work by train 坐电车去公司

公園(こうえん)(はし)ります kōen de hashirimasu run in the park 在公园跑
()()きます te de kakimasu write by hand 用手写
Particle Question it answers Example
Where are you going? / Where does it exist? 学校行く (go to school)
Where does the action take place? 学校勉強する (study at school)
「学校で勉強する」(study at school) uses で because:

Function: Links nouns, most often for possession (X’s Y) or description (modifier + noun).

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
(わたし)(ほん) watashi no hon my book 我的书
日本(にほん)()(もの) Nihon no tabemono Japanese food 日本的食物
(あか)(くるま) akai kuruma → あかい(くるま) red car 红色的车
友達(ともだち)(いえ) tomodachi no ie friend’s house 朋友的家
今日(きょう)天気(てんき) kyō no tenki today’s weather 今天的天气

の is the closest particle match to Mandarin 的: 私の本 = 我的书, 日本の文化 = 日本的文化. It is broader than 的, though. It can replace a noun (赤いの = the red one) and chain modifiers (先生の本 = the teacher’s book).

Function: Adds “also,” “too,” or “even.” It replaces は, が, or を when used in this sense.

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
(わたし)学生(がくせい)です watashi mo gakusei desu I am also a student. 我也是学生。
(かれ)()ます kare mo kimasu He is coming too. 他也来。
コーヒーも()きです kōhī mo suki desu I also like coffee. 我也喜欢咖啡。
今日(きょう)(いそが)しいです kyō mo isogashii desu Today is busy too. 今天也很忙。
1000(えん)(たか) sen-en mo takai Even 1000 yen is expensive. 连1000日元都很贵。

も parallels Mandarin 也: 私も = 我也, 彼も来ます = 他也来. When も replaces は, the topic becomes “also X” rather than “as for X.”

Function: Indicates direction (“toward”) rather than a precise arrival point. It is often interchangeable with に for destinations, but へ emphasizes the journey or direction.

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
東京(とうきょう)()きます Tōkyō e ikimasu head toward Tokyo 往东京去
(みぎ)()がってください migi e magatte kudasai please turn right 请往右拐
(きた)()かう kita e mukau head north 向北走
故郷(こきょう)(かえ)ります kokyō e kaerimasu return toward my hometown 回乡
未来(みらい) mirai e toward the future 向未来

から (kara) / まで (made): from and until

Section titled “から (kara) / まで (made): from and until”

Function: Mark starting point (から) and ending point (まで).

Japanese Romaji English Mandarin
東京(とうきょう)から大阪(おおさか)まで Tōkyō kara Ōsaka made from Tokyo to Osaka 从东京到大阪
()()から()()まで kuji kara goji made from 9 to 5 从九点到五点
(えき)から(ある)いて(じゅっ)(ぷん)です eki kara aruite juppun desu 10 minutes walk from the station 从车站走十分钟
ここから()えます koko kara miemasu visible from here 从这里看得到
来月(らいげつ)まで()ちます raigetsu made machimasu wait until next month 等到下个月

から maps to 从 and まで to 到: 東京から大阪まで = 从东京到大阪, 九時から五時まで = 从九点到五点.

Mistake Wrong Correct Why
Using は for “who?” answers 来ましたか? 来ましたか? Questions about subject use が
Confusing に and で 学校勉強する 学校勉強する に = go/exist; で = action location
Pronouncing particles wrong は as “ha” (topic) は as “wa” (topic) Particle pronunciation differs
Using を with 好き 寿司好き 寿司好き Preferences take が
Omitting particles 私学校行く 学校行く Sentences need particles
Overusing が for general statements 学生です (intro) 学生です Self-intro = topic = は
Which sentence correctly means 'go to school'?

Particle Read Marks Example snippet Mandarin hint
wa Topic 学生 (topic fronting)

ni To/at/time 学校行く 到/在/给
de At/by/with バス行く 在/用/坐
no Of/’s
mo Also/too

Particles are small, but they define how every sentence fits together. Study them in pairs (は/が, に/で, から/まで) and revisit the は vs が examples when reading feels ambiguous. The next page covers everyday phrases where these particles appear in fixed patterns.
